The CV-12BLA is a modified version of Avantone’s original CV-12 large-diaphragm tube condenser microphone.
The “BLA” stands for Black Lion Audio — a boutique company known for modding audio gear. Avantone collaborated with Black Lion Audio to improve certain aspects of the CV-12 to produce the CV-12BLA.
The goal of the mod was to deliver a more balanced frequency response, smoother highs, more low-end presence, and greater headroom than the original CV-12. In effect, to make the mic more versatile (“utilitarian”) for studio use, not just vocals but also instruments, rooms, etc.
Specific changes introduced include replacing the original capsule (32mm K67) with a larger capsule styled after CK12 (34mm) to smooth high frequencies and improve lows. Also, the internal circuit was modified, the coupling capacitor swapped for a higher-quality one (Solen FastCap), and the power supply redesigned to have lower noise. Transformer bridge diode filtering was added too.

The CV-12BLA retains multiple polar patterns (9 selectable via the PS-12 power supply), pads, high-pass filter (“low cut”) switches, etc., making it much more flexible than a single-pattern tube mic.
It started becoming available roughly around late 2019. Thomann lists it as “available since December 2019.”
