MPC stands for Music / MIDI Production Center (some models use “Controller”). It is a series of workstation / sampler / sequencer units that combine sound sampling, sequencing, rhythm programming, and hands-on playability (pads, keys).
The first MPC was created in the late 1980s by Roger Linn in collaboration with Akai, with the MPC-60 being the debut model. It became a cornerstone in hip-hop, sampling culture, and electronic music worldwide.
Over the years, different MPC models have evolved in terms of sampling power, sequencing capabilities, pad layouts, connectivity, built-in software, and increasingly modern user interfaces.
Design / Origins of the MPC Key 37
Launch: The AKAI MPC Key 37 was officially announced in early 2024.
It was designed as the “little sister” of the MPC Key 61 — featuring a smaller frame and keyboard while retaining much of the functionality of its larger sibling. Some features were streamlined to make it more affordable and portable.
A key highlight is that it is a standalone unit with everything built in: sampling, sequencing, plugins, effects, touchscreen, pads, keyboard, and full connectivity — meaning it can be used without a computer (although it also integrates with the MPC2 software for computer use).
Why the MPC Key 37 Was Created
AKAI wanted to offer a middle-ground option between MPCs with no keyboard (pad-only) and the full-sized 61-key version. The MPC Key 37 sits in between: it provides a playable keyboard while remaining more compact and affordable.
It also responds to the growing trend of hardware-based, standalone music production — giving modern producers a flexible tool for both studio and on-the-go use, without having to rely on a computer at all times.
