A bridge between tweed and Tolex
The early 1960s marked a transitional period for Fender amplification, during which Leo Fender’s tweed-colored creations began to exchange their coats for brown, blonde, and black aesthetics. What’s more, these changes were far more than mere visual alterations — it’s a trend throughout the entire Leo-led era that Fender successively made their amps cleaner and more mid-scooped in sound, peaking with the brand’s legendary black-panel and silver-panel offerings. These bright, glassy, and full-range amps stood as a stark sonic contrast to the raw attitude and midrange-forward bite of Fender’s original tweed amps.
Debuting in the late 1950s, Fender’s short-lived brown-panel amps strike an alluring center point between these two tonal poles. Amps like the Fender ’62 Super Amp boast a distinct sound all their own within Fender history, boasting a rich, warm, and “woody” clean tone, as opposed to the sparkling sound of the later black-panel Super Reverb, which cascades into a thrilling mid-forward overdrive when pushed into overdrive.
Sought-after harmonic tremolo circuit
Guitarists of all styles since the mid-20th century have championed Fender’s “vibrato” circuit (famously not vibrato, as Leo Fender had crisscrossed the definitions for vibrato and tremolo) for its choppy and percussive vibe. It’s an essential sound for musicians hoping to recreate the most lauded Fullerton tones of the 1960s and beyond. Still, the truth is that the tremolo circuit found on the Deluxe Reverb, Princeton Reverb, Super Reverb, and so on is far from the only Fender tremolo design!
Before the dominance of “bias wiggle” and optical trem circuits on Fender’s black- and silver-panel amplifiers, Fender experimented with “harmonic tremolo,” a type of phase-shifting tremolo circuit found on a very select few models, including the original Supers that inspired this modern Fender ’62 Super Amp. Sporting a sound that clocks in closer to a light pitch modulation than standard tremolo, this circuit is beloved by Sweetwater’s vintage Fender fanatics for its lush, dense, and chewy vibe.
