The Clarett 8PreX hardware interface allows you to connect microphones, musical instruments, line-level audio signals, and digital audio signals to a computer via the computer’s Thunderbolt™ port. Signals at the physical inputs can be routed to your audio recording software or DAW (Digital Audio Workstation), and outputs from the DAW can be configured to appear at the unit’s physical outputs.

Audio sources such as microphones and instruments can be recorded into your DAW and played back through amplifiers, powered monitors, headphones, a mixer, or any other equipment you choose. Although all inputs and outputs on the Clarett 8PreX are by default routed directly to your DAW for recording and playback, you can configure the routing within the Focusrite Control app to meet your needs.

The Clarett 8PreX provides 26 inputs and 28 outputs simultaneously. In addition to supporting high-quality analogue signals, it also handles multi-channel digital audio in ADAT optical format – 16 channels at 44.1/48 kHz, 8 channels at 88.2/96 kHz, or 4 channels at 176.4/192 kHz. S/PDIF I/O is also included.

It can be easily synchronized with other digital audio equipment in your studio, either as a follower to an external word clock signal or as the leader clock itself. Standard DIN connectors are provided for sending and receiving MIDI data.

A key feature of all Clarett models is the redesigned analogue preamplifier. In addition to their industry-leading dynamic range and ample gain, the circuitry now includes an exciting AIR function. Individually selectable on each channel, AIR subtly adjusts the preamp’s frequency response to emulate the impedance and resonance characteristics of Focusrite’s classic transformer-based ISA mic preamps. This enhances clarity and definition in the mid-range, ideal for vocals and many acoustic instruments.

The accompanying Focusrite Control software is designed for minimal interaction, allowing you to configure the Clarett 8PreX with signal routings suitable for common recording tasks. For more complex setups, it offers extensive routing and monitoring options, as well as the ability to control global hardware settings such as sample rate and synchronization.

All inputs on the Clarett 8PreX are routed directly to your DAW for recording, but Focusrite Control also lets you internally route signals to outputs for ultra-low-latency monitoring before they reach the DAW.
