Mary Ford was born on July 7, 1924, with the birth name Iris Colleen Summers. She was a talented guitarist, singer, and actress who became one of the most renowned artists of the early 1950s. From her beginnings as a country music performer and through her connections with Gene Autry and Eddie Dean, she developed a musical partnership with Les Paul, the Gibson legend, which eventually led to their marriage in 1949.
In just the year 1951, the duo sold over six million records, and between 1950 and 1954, they recorded 16 chart-topping hits. These recordings showcased Mary’s warm, velvety vocals, her intricate and perfectly layered harmonies—achieved through multi-track recording and overdubbing (a cutting-edge technique at the time)—as well as her guitar playing that seamlessly blended country, jazz, and pop styles.
In 1951, Mary and Les also influenced the design of the hollowbody ES-295 through a special order. It is believed that in 1958, a unique Les Paul™ Goldtop was created at Mary’s request, featuring an ES-295-style floral pickguard and a matching armrest.
Today, Gibson proudly introduces the Mary Ford Les Paul Standard, inspired by that one-of-a-kind original. The Goldtop finish is complemented by a Vintage Cherry back, a rare combination for Goldtop models. In addition to its cream-and-gold floral pickguard and armrest, the guitar features a mahogany body with a maple cap, a mahogany neck with a rosewood fingerboard, and a SlimTaper™ profile. It’s powered by two Burstbucker™ pickups—a Burstbucker 2 at the neck and a Burstbucker 3 at the bridge.
The model comes with a hardshell case, completing a tribute to one of the most beloved and innovative artists of the 20th century.
