The Old Blood Noise Endeavors (OBNE) Black Fountain Stereo is a delay pedal that captures the unique and sought-after sound of 1960s “Oil Can Delay” units. These original mechanical devices used a rotating drum coated in oil to create echoes, resulting in a characteristically warm, dark, and heavily modulated delay sound. This Stereo version expands upon the popular Black Fountain V2, introducing full stereo capabilities and modern features, making it a highly creative and distinctive-sounding delay pedal.

Functions and Modes

The core of the Black Fountain Stereo lies in its three distinct delay modes, selectable via the central toggle switch:

1. Modern: This mode offers a sound inspired by oil can delays but with slightly more clarity and a longer available delay time (up to approx. 800ms). It’s perfect for those who want the fundamental oil can character while retaining note definition.
2. Vintage: This mode is a faithful recreation of the original vintage units. The sound is noticeably darker, grittier, and murkier than the Modern mode, with a shorter delay time. It excels at creating truly authentic vintage atmospheres.
3. Organ: The most unique mode, Organ, uses a multi-tap delay combined with modulation to emulate the sound of a rotary speaker or an organ. It creates a lush, swirling, and dimensional sound reminiscent of a Leslie cabinet.

Controls and Features

• Time: Controls the delay time, ranging from very short slaps to a maximum of around 800 milliseconds.
• Mix: Blends your dry (unaffected) signal with the wet (effected) signal. Fully counter-clockwise is 100% dry, while fully clockwise is 100% wet.
• Feedback: Adjusts the number of repeats. As you turn it clockwise, the echoes will repeat for longer, eventually leading to runaway self-oscillation.
• Fluid: This is the “magic” knob. It controls the intensity of the modulation, or the “warble,” in the delay trails. At low settings, it adds a gentle, tape-like flutter. At high settings, it creates a wild, seasick, and wonderfully warped vibrato.
• Tap Tempo: The dedicated left footswitch allows you to easily tap in the desired delay tempo to match the rhythm of your song.
• Trails Mode: The pedal features a buffered bypass, meaning that when you switch the pedal off, the existing delay repeats will continue to fade out naturally.

Stereo Features

This is the main upgrade for this version, offering full mono and stereo operation.

• Stereo Spread (Secondary Function): By holding down the Bypass (right) footswitch and turning the Time knob, you can adjust the time offset between the left and right delay channels. This widens the stereo image, allowing you to go from a centered mono delay to a wide, ping-pong-style effect.
• Stereo Modulation (Secondary Function): By holding down the Bypass footswitch and turning the Fluid knob, you can adjust the phase offset of the modulation between the two channels. This makes the warble and flutter feel more immersive and creates a swirling stereo motion.
